Cuthberton's Mobley and Ruszala will play college hoops!

Conratulations a pair of Cuthbertson's Cavaliers. Ryan Mobley and Steven Ruszala have signed to play college hoops. the 6'2 Mobley has siged to continue he basketball career with King University in Bristol Tenn. Mobley was named All-UCHOOPS 1st team as a junior and senior. He averaged 16.7 ppg and 3.4 apg as a senior. Ruszala, a 6'6 center has signed with Catawba Valley College. Ruszala averaged 10.5 ppg and 7.7 rpg for teh Cavs as a senior. Congrats Boys!!!


Anson Co. Rains taking over at Union Acaemy!

Parkwood High alum Brandon Rains has taken over the boys basketball program at Union Academy for 2016-17 school year. Rains graduated from Parkwood in 2001 and had been the head boys coach at Anson Co. Rains was a combined 49-53 during his tenure with the Bearcats, including an 18-10 record with a playoff win in 2014-15. Raiin 2015-16. Rains is UA’s sixth head coach since the 2011-12 season. The Cardinals will return sophomore Dillon Harrison, who led Union County in scoring at 20.0 ppg last season. He also pulled down 9.4 rebounds per contest and was named UnioncountyHoops.com's 2nd team.


Piedmont's Wickham will play college hoops!

Conratulations to Piemdon'ts Sean Wickham signed a Letter of Commit with Emory Oxford to continue playing basketball in college. Seasn was honorable mention All-UCHOOPs and 1st team All-SCC as a senior for Coach Heath. Sean averaged 10.8 ppg, 5.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks as a senior. Sean had a season high 23 points in a 81-67 win over Porter Ridge. Congrats Sean!!!


Parkwood's Edwards steps down!

Parkwood's head coach for softball and girls basketball, Kate Edwards is stepping down and will take the position of womens head basketball coach at Nations Ford HS in Fort Mill SC. Coach Edwards was 60-18 in the three years she was at the helm. Parkwood made the playoffs all three years and advanced to the 3rd round in 2015-16. Edwards was also the Parkwood softball coach and 52-32 in 4 full seasons as headcoach and advanced to the playoffs in all 3 of the her 4 years. The Rebles advanced to the 4th round in 2015. Congrats Coach Edwards!!!

Piedmont finds their new HC

Piedmont Panther have chosen their successor to retiring boys basketball coach Rudi Heath. The Panthers have tapped former Forest Hills’ girls head coach Jay Fitts as the man to take over for the 2016-2017 season. Fitts takes over a Piedmont program that is 52-52 record in the past four seasons. Fitts has a lot to build around with 6’7 rising junior Hunter Tyson. Tyson was 1st team ALL-UCHOOPs and 1st team ALL-SCC along with finishing 2nd in Union Co. in scoring with 19.4 ppg. Coach Fitts has a career record of 67-128 in 8 years as a head coach in Union Co. He previously coached the Weddington girls from 2006-2009, Porter Ridge boys from 2009-2012 and the Forest Hills girls basketball team from 2014-2016. Good Luck Coach Fitts!!!

Union Academy's sophomore Dillon Harrison was named to the ALL-Yadkin Valley confernece team. Harrison, just a sophomore led the confernece with a 20.0 ppg and grabbed a league leading 9.4 rpg. Harrison also dished out 1.7 assists and averaged 1.5 steals per game for the Cardinals who went 9-16 on the season. Congrats Dillon!

Weddington's Mann picks Washington & Lee University!!

Weddington's senior forward Molly Mann will continue her basketball career at Division III Washington & Lee University. Mann, is a 6’0 ft. forward who was a 3-year starter for the Warriors and helped lead them to a 101-17 record and a trip to the Final-4 as a junior. Mann averaged 11.8 ppg as a senior with a career high of 27 points vs. Mt. Pleasant. Molly grabbed 5.8 rebounds a game as a senior and grabbed a career high of 13 rebounds in a win over Sun Valley. Molly was named ALL-SCC as a senior. Ms. Mann earned UnionCountyHoops.com’s Player of the Week for week 3 this year. Congrats Molly!!!

Piedmont's Rudi Heath set to retire

Piedmont Panther Head basketball coach Rudi Heath has announced his retirement and will be stepping down as Piedmont’s Athletic Director and boys head basketball coach effective March 24th. Coach Heath took over the Piedmont Program in the 2012-13 season from Bob Gearhart. Coach Heath compiled a 52-52 record in four full seasons at the helm of the Panthers. Coach Heath had previously coached at West Stanly. Good Luck Coach Heath!!!!

Union Academy's sophomore Briana Pressley was named to the ALL-Yadkin Valley confernece team. Bressley, just a sophomore averaged 15.5 ppg along with 5.7 rebounds per game. Bressley also dished out 3.4 assists and 4.7 steals per game for the Cardinals who went 6-18 on the season. Congrats Brianna!

Porter Ridge's Jim Rhodes steps down.

Porter Ridge Head basketball coach Jim Rhodes is stepping down to take another position outside of Union Co. Rhodes accepted the position of Athletic Director at Hickory Grove Christian. Coach Rhodes took over the Pirate program in 2012-13 season. His record at Porter Ridge was 24-72 overall as the Pirates moved from 3A to 4A in classification and moved out of the Union Co. dominated Southern Carolina Conference and into the Mecklenburg dominated SW4A conference. Another member of the 1000 point club was gramted as Forest Hills senior guard Zaccheaus Rorie scored his 1000 career point in the 1st round playoff win. Rorie is the 2nd Yellow Jacket to get his 1000 point this season, Senior Jordan Blakeney joined the club earlier this season. Rorie joins Blakeney, along with former Yellwo Jacket standouts Terrance Huntley and Mark Clyburn. Congrats Z!!!!!!!

Union Academy's sophomore Dillon Harrison became the 9th person to score 40+ points in a game. Harrison dropped 42 points in a 77-66 win over Crossroads Charter. Harrison was 15 of 19 from the floor, including seven 3-point baskets. Harrison now finds himself in the company of Sun Valley's Shaun Stewart, Marin Ridge's John Emezie to score 42-points or more in a game. Congrats Dillon!!

Parkwood’s Brittany Autry entered the exclusive 1000 point club in the Rebels win over Sun Valley on Dec 18th. Ms. Autry finished the game with 18 points in the win over Sun Valley. She joins an exclusive club in Parkwood girl’s history that includes Parkwood’s girls all-time leading scorer Tiffany Brown along with Cynthia Mornoe, Emry Tsitouris, Nianna Monroe, Sureka Hammonds and Morgan Brown. Brittany now ranks 13th all time in Parkwood history. Congrats Brittany!!!


Conference play starts the 2nd half of the season.

The five Union Co. Teams boys and girls basketball programs in the SCC will open up conference play this tuesday Jan 5th. Cuthbertson boys (10-2) will host rival Weddington (9-3) both teams went 1-2 in the Cox Mill Christmas Tournament. The Sun Valley Spartans (8-5) will travel to Anson Co. and Piedmont (9-3) will travel to Marvin Ridge (9-5). The Weddington Lady Warriors (11-2) will take on Cuthbertson (5-6). The Sun Valley Spartans (7-6) have lost 6 of their last 8 ames will take on Anson Co. (2-9). The Piedmont Lady Panters (10-1) are coming off their first loss of the season to Porter Ridge in the Mt. Pleasant Christmas Tournament championship, will take on Marvin Ridge (5-7).

The Rocky River conferene will open up its play as well on Friday Jan. 8th with the Forest Hills Yellow Jackets at Mt. Pleasant bu tiwll play at Union Academy on Tuesday Jan. 6th. The CATA Cougars will host Mt. Island Charter on Jan 6th, at Union Academy on Jan. 7th and will host Monroe on Jan 8th. The Monroe Redhawks have only played one game and that was on Dec. 18th a win over Albemarle. They will host Union Academy Jan. 4th, at Lancaster Jan. 5th, at CATA Jan 8th and host Anson Co. on Jan 9th. The Parkwood Rebels (1-10) will host West Stanly on Jan 8th but will start the week hosting Piedmont on Jan 6th.

The Lady Rebels are coming off the Comporium Classic Championshiop for the 3rd year in a row and will host West Stanl (9-3)y on January 8th. Monroe Lady Redhawks not playing a conference opponent till Jan. 8th when they travel to C.A.T.A. (3-9) The Redhakws (3-1) will host Union Academy and will be at Lancaster on Monday and Tuesday. Forest Hills (7-5) will be at Union Academy on Jan 6th and will be at Mt. Pleasant on Friday January 8th.

The Porter Ridge open up South West Confernece play by hosting Myers Park Jan 5th. and at Butler on Jan 8th.

The Union Academy Cardinals will opne up Yankin Valley confernece play on Jan 12th at Albemarle but will be at Mornoe on Jan 4th, host Forest Hills on Jan 6th and host rival CATA on Jan 7th.


Holiday Tournament's starting Monday

Four boys basketball teams from Union County are set to compete in the Cox Mill High Christmas tournament this week. The 16-team field includes Cuthbertson, Por ter Ridge, Sun Valley and Weddington. Five out-of-state teams will also be in attendance along with Hough, Davidson Day, Ashbrook, Lake Norman, Concord, Hickory Ridge. Piedmont will compete in the Mount Pleasant Christmas tournament, starting with a first-round game against Gray Stone Day on Monday. The Panthers are 7-2 overall with their two losses coming to Forest Hills, which is 8-1.

Forest Hills is competing in the Farm Bureau Insurance Classic at Chester field (S.C.) High. The Yellow Jackets take on Dillon (S.C.) in the opening round on Monday. Parkwood’s boys are part of the field at the Com- porium Classic, which is being held at Andrew Jackson (S.C.) High. The Rebels (1-9) faced Andrew Jackson HS but lost 63-59 in the 1st round. The Rebels will take on Chester on Monday the 28th. Central Academy (1-9) plays Piedmont Char terin the opening round of the Gaston Christian Christmas tournament on Monday.

Parkwood Lady Rebels started the Comporium Classic with a 61-51 win over Chester HS and will take on Andrew Jackson on Monday Dec 28th. The Lady Panthers will be participating in the Mount Pleasant Christmas tournament and will take on NW Cabarrus in the 1st round. The Porter Ridge Lady Pirates wil take on MT. Pleasant in the 1st round. The C.A.T.A. Lady Cougars will be in teh Gaston Christian Christmas Tournamnet taking on Piedmont Charter HS on Monday.

The Monroe Redhawks 2015-16 season has been put on hold due to the Monroe Redhawks football team advancing to the state championship for football. Monroe is unsure on make up dates as well determing what games will be made up and what games will be canceled. Good Luck Redhawks!!

Weddington gets transfer.

The Weddington Warriors have added Elanna Peay to the squad. Ms. Peay, 5'9 forward has transfered to Weddington after spending last season at Concord 1st Assembly where she averaged 6.1 ppg and grabbed 8.6 rpg in 28 games. Peay played her freshman year at Central Cabarrus. She is expected to add depth to the post play for the Warriors who open the season hosting Parkwood on Nov. 17th.

When the Wingate Bulldogs traveled to UNC Chapel Hill this past Wednesday for an exhibition game Union Co. basketball fans were able to see three members of the 2014-15 1st Team ALL-UCHOOPS in action. UNC freshman and former Weddington Warrior Stephanie Watts started at guard for the Lady ‘Heels. Watts was the 2014-15 UCHOOPS Player of the year. For Wingate freshmen Taylor Helms, Cuthbertson's all time scorer and Zasha Barrett out of Monroe saw a few minutes in the 59-48 Tar Heel win.

Helms played one minute and didn’t score, Barrett played four minutes and scored 2 points and grabbed 2 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Watts played 29 minutes for the ‘Heels but shot poorly just 1-10 from the floor and 2-4 from the foul line. Ms. Watts grabbed five rebounds, had 1 assist and 2 blocks in the win.

The Lady Heels will take on Mount Olive in an exhibition on Monday Nov. 9th and the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Raleigh to take on the NC State Wolfpack in an exhibition on Sunday Nov. 8th.

C.A.T.A. names Byrum as new head ladies coach.

Central Academy has announced that they have named Tony Byrum as girls head basketball coach. Coach Byrum was formerly the womens head coach at Monroe. Byrum replaced Kevin Allran as head coach who took over in 2014-15 for the Cougars. The Cougars were 8-14 last season.

C.A.T.A. names Daniels as new mens head coach.

Central Academy has announced that they have named David Daniels as mens head basketball coach. Coach Daniels was formerly the womens head coach at Cuthbertson for the 2009-2010 and Sun Valley befor that. Daniels replaced Greg Wenger as head coach who took over in 2011 for the Cougars. The Cougars were 6-18 last season.

Sheona Woodham (FH)


Forest Hills' Woodham staying put at Forest Hills.

It was reported here that Forest Hills sophomore guard Sheona Woodham was transfering out of Union Co. That report was incorrect and according to Forest Hills head coach Jay Fitts she is staying put. "We are very happy to have Sheona returning for her sophomore year", Coach Fitts stated via text. Woodham was named 3rd Team All-UnionCountyHoops as a freshman and was 1st team All-NewComer team as well. Woodham led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with a 12.0 average along with 3.0 steals per game and 3.0 assists per game. The Yellow Jackets were 10-15 in 2015 falling in the 1st round of the state 2A playoffs

Piedmont's rising junior Naj'la Bibb has transfered out of Piedmont. Bibb was 2nd team All-UnionCountyHoops as a sophomore after posting 11.7 points per game & 8.8 rebounds per game which led the Lady Panthers.Bibb was also named to the All-NewComers 1st Team. The Panthers were 15-13 and fell to Cuthbertson in the 1st round of the 3A state playoffs.


Union Co. basketball record book is coming soon.

I have been covering Union Co. basketball for 10 years and have always felt that there needed be a "record book" in regards to Union Co. high school basketball. Union Co. has developed some of the best basketball in the Charlotte area and it needs to be recognized. I am in the process of compiling the #'s and look forward to releasing it soon. Warriors Schwieger gets 1st offer.

Weddington’s Ryan Schweiger is starting to make a name for him self. Schwiger, a rising junior, has received a scholarship offer from Division I Presbyterian College after the Warriors attended a team camp at the South Carolina school earlier this summer. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound combo guard was named 3rd team All-UCHOOPS and was named the 2014-15 UCHOOPS.com's New Comer of the Year. Schwieger ranked second on the team at 10.5 points per game last season, when the Warriors finished 24-5 and reached the third round of the 3A state playoffs. He also pulled down 6.9 rebounds per game. Congrast Ryan!

Porter Ridge High School has announced a new Athletic Director! Current athletic director, Bill Rogers, will retire at the end of June and Ina Thompson will take his place. Thompson is a Union County native and graduate of Piedmont High School and Wingate University. She is one of the original teachers who opened Porter Ridge in 2005 and is the only women's basketball coach for the Pirates. Coach Thompson turned a brand new team into a perennial playoff team with 8 playoff appearances in 10 years Program’s record 184-84, 3 Conference Titles, 3 Conference Tournament Titles, 4 Holiday Tournament Titles, 3 Sectional Runner Up, and Western Regional Runner Up. Congrats Coach!

Malcom Wade (CU)

Cuthberton’s Malcom Wade is transferring to Metrolina Christian. Cuthberston’s freshman guard Malcom Wade will transfer to Metrolina Christian for his sophomore season. The 5’10 Wade saw significant playing time for Coach Helms averaging 6.3 ppg and 2.2 apg in 28 games. The Cavs advanced to the Elite-8 this past season. Wade was a member of the ALL-UCHoops.com’s New Comer Team in 2014-15. Wade was expected to start in the backcourt with rising senior Ryan Mobley for Cuthbertson.

Central Academy's Alyssa Carbone will be playing basketball in 2015-16 for Greensboro College. Ms. Carbone was named UnionCountyHoops.com's 1st Team and is CATA's all-time leading scorer with 131 points in her career. As a senior Ms. Carbone was 2nd in Union Co. scoring with a 21.3 average. Ms. Carbone grabbed 6.5 rpg and Carbone was name to the District 9 3rd-Team as a senior. Congrats Alyssa!!!

Zasha Barrett (M)


Monrore's Barrett picks Wingate!!

Monroe's Zasha Barrett will continue her playing career close to home as she signed with the Wingate Bulldogs. Zasha was named All-UCHOOPS 1st team as a senior & 3rd Team as a junior and sophomore. Zasha was awarded UCHoops Player of the Week 2 times as a senior. Ms. Barrett average 17.4 ppg along with leading Union Co. in rebounding with 13.7 rpg. Zasha added 3.5 spg and blocked 1.9 shots as a senior. Ms. Barrett's 981 career rebounds puts her 6th all-time in career rebounds in Union Co. history. In 75 ganes as a Redhawk Zasha averaged 14.4 ppgm 13.1 rpg, 2.5 spg and 1.9 bpg Congrats Zasha!!!

Porer Ridge's senior guard RJ Filio will continue his playing career at Methodist Univeristy. RJ helped lead the Pirates to a 9-15 record while averaging 14.0 ppg along with 2.5 assists per game adn 1.2 steals per game despite injuring his ACL. Sun Valley senior guard Cameron Corey will continue his playing career at William Pieace Univeristy. Cameron helped lead the Sun Valley Spartans to a 11-15 record as a senior. Corey, a 6'2 senior guard averaged 8.2 ppg and 2.6 apg for the Spartans. Congrats Cameron!!!

The 2014-15 UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of they Year Jordan Barber has signed with Catawba to continue his hoops playing career. Mr. Barber finished 2nd in Union Co. in scoring with 16.5 ppg. Jordan grabbed 4.3 rebounds per game from the guard position, dished out 3.2 assists per game and added 3.1 steals per game. Jordan surpassed the 1000 point plateau for his career and is the 3rd all-time scorer in Weddington school history with 1156 points scored. Barber is now Weddington’s all-time leader in steals with 247. Jordan was named 1st team all UnionCountyHoops for the 2nd year in a row and was named 1st team All-SCC.

Jordan helped lead the Warriors to a 24-5 record and into the the 3rd round of the state playoffs. Congrats Jordan!!!

Watts named AP's top player

Stephanie Watts continues to pile up the accomplishments after a unbelievable career at Weddington. Union County’s all-time leading scorer (2,566 points) and the state record holder for 3-pointers made in a season (156), the Weddington High senior also has McDonald’s all- American and UNC-Chapel Hill signee. Now she’s been voted player of the year for the state of North Carolina by the Associated Press. She is the first Union County basketball player to claim that award. The 5-foot-10 guard received 17 of the possible 21 votes. Hickory’s Yazmen Hannah and Myers Park’s Aliyah Mazyck each got two votes.

As a senior Watts averaged 29.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 4.7 steals and 2.4 blocks per game. The Warriors finished 29-2, won the Southern Carolina Conference and advanced to the 3A state semifinals for the first time in school history. Ms. Watts will play in the Jordan Brand Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 17. She will also compete in the East-West All-Star game in Greensboro on July 20. Congrats Stephanie!!

Weddington’s Stephanie Watts, a 5-foot-9 guard, is the state’s Ms. Basketball. Watts has signed with the University of North Carolina. Watts is 3-Time UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the year as well as being named district player of the year, was also named N.C. Gatorade Player of the Year. She averaged 29 points, 8.8 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 4.7 steals. She ranks 11th in state history in scoring (2,556 points) and is second in career made 3-pointers (374). She is a four-time SCC player of the year. Watts scored 19 points and made 4-of-9 3-pointers in Wednesday’s McDonald’s game. Ingram scored 15 points in the boys’ game. Congrats Stephanie!!

The East beat the West 89-87 at the United Center for the 2015 Women’s McDonald’s All-American Game. The East led 13-2 to start the game but the West roared back and took a three-point lead into halftime. After trailing by three to start the second half, the East team was bolstered by aggressive rebounding by their forwards. Tennessee signee Te’a Cooper (McEachern; Powder Springs, Ga.) from the East had 21 points, two short of the game’s scoring record. Nineteen of her 21 points came in the first half. “The comeback was Stephanie Watts,” Cooper said. “She went off. She brought us back into the game.” Weddington’s Stephanie Watts, a University of North Carolina signee showed off agile moves late in the game, finishing with 19 points in just 15 minutes. “Everyone was good and chipped in, and started to put the pieces together in the second half,” Watts said. “We started playing together and making shots in the second half.”

Ms. Watts recorded 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks in the game.

Parkwood’s Lillian Geehring has committed to play basketball at Methodist University. Lillian was a 3-year starter for Coach Kate Edwards. The 5’6 senior guard, Ms. Geehring averaged 8.0 points per game along with 2.5 assists per game for her 3 year career at Parkwood. Watts named Gatorade NC Player of the Year!

In its 30th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Stephanie Watts of Weddington High School as its 2014-15 Gatorade North Carolina Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Watts is the first Gatorade North Carolina Girls Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Weddington High School. Congratulations Stephanie!

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Watts as North Carolina’s best high school girls basketball player. Helms ends career with 1576 career points

Taylor Helms joined an elite club this past basketball season as she entered the 1500 point scored club. The future Wingate Bulldog scored 17 points in her final game as a Cuthbertson Cavalier, a loss to Ashville Erwin. Taylor finishes her 4-year career with 1576 points scored which puts her 14th all-tim in Union Co. history. Congratulations Taylor!

Another Union Co. record falls to Watts!

Weddington's senior guard Stephanie Watts has rewritten the Union Co. record book this season and added to it in a 75-54 win over Sun Valley. Ms. Watts set the record for most points in a season on her 2nd 3-pointer on the night. Watts scored 19 points in the 1st half on her way to 32 in the Win. Watts entered the game 3 point behind former Sun Valley star Amanda Leigh with 678 points in the 2005-06 season. Watts now has 707 points scored and will look to add to it thru the SCC Tournament. Monroe's Barrett joins the 1000 point club!

Monroe senior forward Zasha Barrett became the 4th Union Co. player to surpass the 1000 point mark this past week. Barrett joins Sun Valley's Hanna Adamczyk and CATA's Alyssa Carbone on the girls side a long with CATA's Quay Threat for the boys. Barrett scored her 1000 point in a 63-45 win over rival Forest Hills. She finished with 27 points, 22 rebounds, six blocks and five steals. Congrats Zasha!!!

Sun Valley's Hannah Adamczyk joined the 1000 point club for the Spartans after scoring 23 in a loss to Weddington. Adamczyk need just 7 points heading into the game. Adamcyzk now has 1013 total points in 3 years at Sun Valley. Adamczyk will look to grow the total as the Spartans will face Anson Co. in the 1st round of the SCC Tourncament on Monday. Threatt joins 1000 point club!

Central Acadey's Quay Threatt joined Alyssa Carbon as a memebr of the 1000 point club representing C.A.T.A. Threatt scored 15 points in a loss to Parkwood. He now has 1005 points. Mr. Threatt is 2nd Central Academy Cougar to reach the 1000 point club joing Ryan Grigston , who holds the the CATA record holder for points in a career with 1043. Congratulations Quay!!!

Central Acadey's Alyssa Carbone surpassed the 1000 point mark in her career in a 43-41 win over Forest Hills. Ms. Carbone is the 1st Central Academy Cougar to reach the 1000 point club. Congratulations Alyssa!!!

Helms says YES to Wingate!

Senior guard Taylor Helms received her first offer to play basketball at the next level from Wingate and has accepted it and will sign her name on April 15th. Helms, a four-year starter for the Cavaliers is Cuthbertson’s all- time leading scorer. Taylor was named 1st team All-UnionCountyHoops 1st team as a junior and UnionCountyHoops.com’s 2nd team as a sophomore and freshman. Congrats Taylor!.

Barber reaches 1000 point plateau

Weddington's senior gaurd Jordan Barber eclipsed the 1000 point mark in his career in the 77-60 loss to Cuthbertson. Barber is one of five Weddington players to score at least 1000 points. Barber joins Stewart Short, Ben Short, Cory Rase and Bennett Rutherford as the only 5 players in Weddington school history to eclipse the 1000 point plateau. Congrats Jordan!

Cameron Tripp,the outstanding senior forward for Piedmont scored a career high of 38 points in a 79-66 loss to Anson Co. Tripp's prevoius career high was 31 which was netted against Charlotte Latin this past Holiday Tournament. Congrats Cameron!!

Weddington's Stephanie Watts continues to re-write the Union Co. record book, this time by setting the Union Co. record for womens points scored in a career. Watts set the record in a 74-54 win over Piedmont. The previous record was 2161 by Parkwood's Tiffany Brown from 2001-2004. Watts is averaging 30.4 points a game this season. Weddington's Stephanie Watts recorded the third career quadruple-double in the 72-23 win over Marvin Ridge. Watts finished with 36 points, 11 rebounds, 11 steals and 10 assists to help the Warriors improve to 14-1 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Carolina Conference.

The Forest Hills Yellow Jackets brought in the new year with a championship by winning the Chesterfield Holiday Tournament on New Years Eve. The Yellow Jackets defeated Nations Ford, Creekbridge, and Cheraw to take home the Hardware! Congrats to Desmond Lindsey, Jordan blakeney and Michael Whitis for making the All Tournament Team. Stephanie Watts needed 5 points to reach the 2000 point mark in her career. Stephanie scored the five points needed and another 35 points to finish with 2035 career ponts, The 2014 PDQ Holiday Classic Title and Tournament MVP!! Stephnie scored 103 points in the 3 games including her 2000 career point in the championship game. The Union Co. career scoring record of 2161 points is currenlty held by Tiffany Brown from Parkwood (2001-04). Congrats Steph..Go Get It!!!

Lady Warriors win 2014 PDQ Holiday Classic!!

The Weddington Lady Warriors took home the Championship PDQ Holiday Classic. The Warriors defeated Concord 72-33, Hopewell 53-38 and JM Robison 72-59 in the Title game. The Warriors were paced by Tournament MVP Stephanie Watts. Ms. Watts scored 103 points in the 3 games including her 2000 career point in the championship game. Congrats Lady Warriors!!!

Porter Ridge's Homesley out for Season!

Porter Ridge's leading scorer Caleb Homesly will miss the rest of the 2014-15 season with a torn ACL. Homesly injured the knee in the 67-53 win over Independence on Dec 16th. According to Porter Ridge HC Jim Rhodes, the senior Homesly will have surgery on Jan 7 and will miss the rest of the season. HEAL FAST CALEB!!!!

Huntley enters 1000pt club for Yellow Jackets

Forest Hill's Terrance Huntley has added 1,000- point scorer to his long list of accomplishments at Forest Hills High. Huntley is a four-year as a starter and UnionCountyHoops.com's Newcomer of the Year in 2011-12. He made 2nd team All-countyHoops as a freshman/sophomore/junior yeasr. Terrance averaged a team-high 13.4 ppg and a county-high 2.9 steals in 2013-14. Huntley currently sits at 1,011 career points, is averaging 11.6 ppg so far this season. Congratulations Terrnce!!!

Congrats to Cameron Tripp on becoming the all time leading scorer in Piedmont basketball history. Tripp surpased former Piedmont standout Marcus Winnigan. The Panthers lost 65-52 to Scotland Co. despite 15 points and 16 rebounds from Trip. Congratulations Cameron!!!

Weddington girls head coach Ryun Cook celebrated his 150th career win in a 64-47 win over Garinger. Cook is in his 6th year at Weddington. He spent 5 years at Sun Valley. Congratulations Coach Cook!!!

Piedmont's senior forward Cameron Tripp joined the 1000 point club for the Piedmont Panthers in a 50-45 win over Carmel Christian in the Ccoaches vs. Cancer Tournament Saturday. Tripp finished the night with 10 points, grabbed 14 rebounds adn blocked 5 shots in the win. Congratulations Cam!!!.

Homesly says YES to Liberty!

Porter Ridge senior guard Caleb Homesley committed to Liberty last weekend. Homesley, 6'5 the forward/guard, averaged 19 points last season and was 2nd Team All-UCHOOPS.com as a junior and a Southwestern 4A all-conference pick. Homesley grabbed 3.3 rebougnds and 2.5 assists per game for the Pirates and Coach Jim Rhodes. He chose Liberty over seven schools, including UNC Greensboro, Gardner-Webb, Appalachian State and The Citadel

Watts says YES to UNC!!

North Carolina women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell offered Weddington High's Stephanie Watts a full scholarship and of course she immediately accepted. UNC's Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell told Watts she's capable of playing all three perimeter positions in college. Weddington heac coach Ryun Cook has been coaching girls basketball in Union County for 15 years, and says he's never seen a player come through with Watts' combination of size and skill. Watts is the most highly-recruited female to come through Union County. Watts is a 2-time UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Year and has led Union Co. in scoring the past two years. She has at least 14 major college offers before her junior year. Stephanie is a 2-time UnionCountyHoops.com's Player of the Year and led Weddington to the Elite-8 in the NC 3A State Playoffs this past March
